Assessment of hydrogen embrittlement behavior in Al-Zn-Mg alloy through multi-modal 3D image-based simulation

Hydrogen(H) embrittlement in high-strength aluminum(Al) alloys is a crucial problem. H accumulation at the interface of precipitates in Al alloy is considered to cause embrittlement. However, there is no quantitative knowledge regarding the interaction between H distribution and stress field near cracks. In this study, using a multi-modal three-dimensional image-based simulation combining the crystal plasticity finite element method and H diffusion analysis, we tried to capture the stress distribution near the crack, its influence on the H distribution, and the probability of crack initiation in the experimental condition. As a result, it was found that grain boundary cracks transition to quasi-cleavage cracks in the region where the cohesive energy of the semi-coherent interface of MgZn$$_2$$ precipitates decreases due to H accumulation near the tip. We believe the present simulation method successfully bridges nanoscale delamination and macroscale brittle fracture.

When living cells are irradiated with radiation and complex damage is formed within a few nanometers of DNA, it is believed to induce biological effects such as cell death. In general, complex DNA damage formed in cells can be detected experimentally by fluorescence microscopy, because the area around the damage site emits light like a focus point when a fluorophore is used. However, this detection method has not been able to analyze the degree of complexity of DNA damage. Therefore, in this study, we addressed on the measured focus size and evaluated the degree of complexity of DNA damage using a track structure analysis code. As a result, we found that as DNA damage becomes more complex, the focus size also increases. Our findings are expected to provide a new analytical method for elucidating the initial factors of radiation biological effects.

Impact of the Lorentz force on electron track structure and early DNA damage yields in magnetic resonance-guided radiotherapy

Recently, magnetic resonance-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) which can visualize tumors in real time has been developed and installed in several clinical facilities. It is known that Lorentz force modulate macroscopic dose distribution by a charged particle, however, the impact by the force on microscopic radiation-track structure and early DNA damage induction remain unclear. In this study, we simulated the electron-track structure in a static magnetic field using a PHITS, and estimated features of biological effects. We indicated that the macroscopic dose distributions are changed by the force, while early DNA damage such as double strand breaks is attributed to the secondary electrons below a few tens of eV which are independent of the force. We expect that our insight significantly contributes to the MRgRT.

Effect of nickel concentration on radiation-induced diffusion of point defects in high-nickel Fe-Cr-Ni model alloys during neutron and electron irradiation

The quantitative evaluation of vacancy migration energies in high nickel model alloy was conducted by analyzing the void denuded zone (VDZ) width formed near grain boundaries under neutron and electron irradiation. The microstructures of Fe-15Cr-xNi (x=15, 20, 25, 30 mass%) alloys that were neutron irradiated at 749 K and electron irradiated at 576 K-824 K were examined. The VDZ widths increased with increasing Ni content in both irradiation experiments, which implies an increase of the vacancy mobility. The vacancy migration energies were estimated from the temperature dependence of the VDZ widths, and the energies were 1.09, 0.97, 0.90, and 0.77 eV for the alloys containing 15, 20, 25, and 30 mass% Ni, respectively. From the obtained energies, the effective vacancy diffusivity and excess vacancy concentration were estimated using the analytical equation of the VDZ width, which quantitatively confirmed the increase of the vacancy mobility with increasing Ni content.

Recovery of radiation degradation on inverted metamorphic triple-junction solar cells by light soaking

Radiation response is one of the important properties for space solar cells. It should be well understood so as to accurately predict their degradation in orbit and also to improve their radiation tolerance. Recently, a phenomenon, recovery from the radiation degradation by light soaking, on inverted metamorphic (IMM) triple-junction (3J) solar cells was found out. In this work, the light soaking annealing effects on electron irradiated IMM 3J solar cells are reported. IMM 3J solar cells irradiated with 1 MeV electrons with the fluence of 3$$times$$10$$^{15}$$ e$$^-$$/cm$$^2$$ showed the recovery of open-circuit voltage, Voc, up to 43 mV after light (AM0, 1 sun) soaking of 3 hours. The increment of the electroluminescence intensity for InGaP in the IMM 3J cells due to the light soaking suggests that the Voc recovery occurs in InGaP top-cell rather than GaAs middle-cell or InGaAs bottom-cell.

Projection images of a metal mesh produced by directional MeV electron beam together with directional proton beam, emitted simultaneously from a thin foil target irradiated by an ultrashort intense laser. The mesh patterns are projected to each detector by the electron beam and the proton beam originated from tiny virtual sources of $$sim$$ 20 micron meter and $$sim$$10 micron meter diameters, respectively. Based on the observed quality and magnification of the projection images, we estimate sizes and locations of the virtual sources for both beams and characterize their directionalities. To carry out physical interpretation of the directional electron beam qualitatively, we perform 2D particle-in-cell simulation which reproduces a directional escaping electron component, together with a non-directional dragged-back electron component, the latter mainly contributes to building a sheath electric field for proton acceleration.

Sequential radiation chemical reactions in aqueous bromide solutions; Pulse radiolysis experiment and spur model simulation

Pulse radiolysis experiments were carried out to observe transient absorptions of reaction intermediates produced in N$$_{2}$$O$$^{-}$$ and Ar-saturated aqueous solutions containing 0.9-900 mM NaBr. The most important species among the reaction intermediates are BrOH $$^{cdot -}$$ and Br$$_{2}$$ $$^{cdot -}$$, which commonly have absorption peaks around 360 nm. The experimental results were compared with the results of simulation based on a spur diffusion model. Each of several complicated sequential radiation-induced chemical reactions was carefully considered, optimizing its rate constant within a range of reported values. All the experimental results were able to be universally reproduced by the simulation, assuming a reaction not yet reported, 2BrOH$$^{cdot -}$$ $$rightarrow$$ Br$$_{2}$$ + 2OH$$^{-}$$, with a rate constant of 3.8 $$times$$ 10$$^{9}$$ M$$^{-1}$$ s$$^{-1}$$, which is significant only within 10 micro-s for rather high bromide concentrations ($$>$$ 10 mM). Primary $$G$$ values, which are yields after sufficient diffusion from the spur to the perimeter region during 100 ns, of major water decomposition products, as well as of the reaction intermediates, were calculated for N$$_{2}$$O$$^{-}$$ and Ar-saturated conditions as a function of NaBr concentration.

The crystal structure of the double-layered Ca$$_{3}$$Ru$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ has been studied by convergent beam electron diffraction and powder neutron diffraction. The temperature dependence of the diffraction pattern reveals that all the lattice constants jump at the first-order metal-nonmetal transition at 48 K without a change of the space group symmetry of Bb21m. In the neutron diffraction experiment, an additional magnetic reflection emerges below the Neel temperature, 56K. A possible model for this antiferromagnetic ordering is proposed, in which model magnetic moments align ferromagnetically within the double layer and antiferromagnetically between the double layers. This model reasonably explains the characteristic field dependence of the magnetoresistance observed at around 6 T.
